History.
With the discovery of fossil remains in the Piquimachay Caves and
the town of Pacaicassa, it has been determined that the humans lived
in Ayacucho more than 20000 years ago. The Wari Culture was
developed in the province of Huanta. The Wiracocha Inca found a
strong opposition by local tribes. In some historic compilations, it
is stated that one rebellion occurred against the Inca authority,
which resulted in a huge massacre. Due to the number of deaths
caused by the battles, this place was named Ayacucho, which in
Quechua means "Corner of the Dead".
The Spaniards found the people in this area to be very organized and
hardworking with a sense of community. Pizarro was looking for the
most appropriate place to found an intermediate city between Lima
and Cusco, so the city of Ayacucho was founded in 1539.
The San Cristobal de Huamanga University (Viceregal Age) was founded
in 1677. This city was the birthplace of the heroine María Parado de
Bellido, who participated in the battle for the Independence. The
Independence of Peru was achieved after the Battle of Ayacucho on
December 9, 1824. One of the most outstanding men born in Ayacucho
was Andrés Avelino Cáceres, hero of the war against Chile and
President of the Republic in 1886 and 1894.
Tourism
The city of Ayacucho or the "City of Churches" got its name because
there are more than 40 colonial churches. The Quinua Pampa is
located near the city. This was the scene for the Battle of Ayacucho
between Spaniards and Peruvians.
The oldest tools of Peru (20,000 years) were found in the
Piquimachay and Pacaicassa caves. The center of the Wari Culture was
located in Ayacucho. Vilcashuaman is located 120 km to the south of
Ayacucho and was an Inca administrative center. You can also find
the Temple of the Sun and Moon here. Intiwatana, located near
Vilcashuaman, is an archaeological complex that has a palace and a
fortified tower, the Inca baths (with a 17-angle stone) and an
artificial lagoon.
The National Reserve of Pampa Galeras is designated to protect the
vicuña, the smallest of the South American Camelidaes. Their fine
fur is used for high quality textiles. |
