Bahuaja
Sonene
National Parks. |

 |
The
Bahuaja - Sonene National park was established on the
17th of July in 1996 by means of Supreme Law # 012 - 96
- AG. It was created as a result of the territorial
regulation carried out with the active participation of
guild and social organizations, authorities, specialists
and local communities from Madre de Dios and Puno.
This National Park is located in the Madre de Dios and
Puno districts, in the provinces of Tambopata and
Sandia, respectively. It includes a surface area of
53,705,325 hectares that correspond to the Pampas del
Heath National Sanctuary and part of the Reserved Zone
Tambopata-Candamo. Its name in the Ese'eja language is
one of the rivers whose river basins it protects: the
Tambopata and Heath. It conforms a frontier area with
the Madidi National Park in Bolivia.
This Park harbors intact populations of various species
of threatened wild fauna such as the: giant river otter
(Pteronura brasiliensis), bush dog or savannah dog (Speothos
venaticus), the black caiman (Melanosuchus niger) and
the harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja).
Just like in the Tambopata National reserve there is a
diverse variety of birds and insects like butterflies,
dragonflies and arboreal ants that exist. It also
protects the only existing sample in Peru of the
denominated pampas or tropical humid savannas and the
respective wild fauna that are found in this ecosystem:
marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus) and the maned wolf (Chrysocyon
brachyurus), which are not found in any other region of
the country.
The Heath river and its pampas are a unique ecosystem in
Peru. This river by itself not only gives access to the
famous Heath Pampas, but it includes a grand extension
of argillaceous terraces that seem to be associated to
the colpas parrots and other animals. The pampas with
approximately 8,000 hectares is pastureland that is
flooded periodically and regenerates with occasional
fires in the dry season.
The origin and age of the pampas are unknown, but its
future is associated to the periodic fires. The
pastureland that regenerates in the pampas that is
unconsumed by fire, are of short periods of duration.
Among the principal objectives of the Bahuaja-Sonene
National Park, is the conservation of the beautiful
landscapes of the southern forest and protecting the
only existing sample of the tropical humid savannas in
Peru and its wild flora and fauna, especially the marsh
deer and the maned wolf.
