 Biking Cotahuasi  Canyon
  ( 3 days 2 nights )

Summary:The Cotahuasi Canyon is one of our favorite places in Peru and our knowledge about this region make us the first biking tour company offering mountain bike tours to the Cotahuasi Canyon. This tour is designed for expereinced bikers; it has nice and easy up- and downhills, but also medium and extreme cross country for the adventurous cyclists. Cycling through typical villages, crossing old hanging bridges, cross country from the highlands to the pacific ocean and discovering pre Inca remains

Itinerary.
Day 1: Arequipa - Chuquibamba - Visque Grande - Cotahuasi.  (L) (D)
Today you will start your adventure to world´s deepest canyon. Your private driver and guide will pick you up from your hotel in Arequipa at 6 AM. You will travel for approximately 7 hours, passing through the desert along the Pan American highway, across the valley and canyon of Majes. We will take another road from the Majes valley, up to the highlands passing through a small lunar valley, where you will see lots of contrasts of colors of the mountains between the coast and the Andes. After 5 hours of travelling, we arrive at Chuquibamba (3300m), a typical Andean farming village, located on the bottom of the Coropuna snow mountain (6377m). Here we will make a short stop to stretch our legs and to have a snack or an early lunch.
From Chuquibamba begins the gravel road passing through small forests of Andean trees, also known as Queñuas, where we will spot many South American camelids, such as Llamas, Alpacas, Huanacos and Vicuñas. The gravel road between the Coropuna and Solimana mountains gives us a spectacular view of glaciers on the top of each mountain. Around 2 PM we will arrive at Visque Grande (4670 m). Here we will take our bikes off the car and before we start our mountain bike adventure, you will have a short briefing regarding safety, the use of gears and brakes, the protective equipment and an explanation about the route. The first part of the mountain bike tour will be on a paved road, with almost 2000 meter of downhill, enjoying the beautiful views of mountains, the flora and fauna, deep cliffs and seeing local people. The more adventurous an experienced biker can take the exciting off road shortcuts, bringing you down on a steep path. The downhill from Visque Grande to the Cotahuasi town takes around 2 hours. We will overnight in a basic, but comfortable hotel in Cotahuasi, with a private bath and a hot shower. After a warm shower, we will enjoy a hearty meal.

Day 2: Cotahuasi - Mirador of Cotahuasi Canyon - Toro - Sipia Water Fall. (B) (L) (D)
Today, we will wake up with a delicious breakfast made of local products, such as the local cheese, fried eggs, cereals and typical fruits, such as avocado, passion fruits or cactus fruits. Around 8 AM our private van will take us to our starting point ´Mirador de Cotahuasi´ (4030 m), located on the top of the Cotahuasi. From here we will go downhill on a gravel road towards the Toro village (2970 m). This Toro village is located between two mountains completely covered with pre- Inca and Inca terraces. This road has many corners, making it a more challenged trip. After 2 hours we will arrive at the Cotahuasi River and we will cycle along the river towards the waterfall of Sipia (2060 m). This waterfall is the highest one to be found in the Arequipa region and is located in the deepest canyon of the world. We will have some leisure time at the waterfall and after a picnic, our private van will drive us for 2 hours to the upper part of the canyon, passing through the typical villages of Piro, Cotahuasi, Taurisma, Tomepampa, Alca and finally we will arrive at Puica, where we will have a delicious lunch at a local restaurant. After, we will take our bikes again and we will cycle the same road we used before to get to Puica. We will cycle along the mountains, terraces, farming villages and the upper part of the canyon. After 2 hours of cycling, we arrive at Luicho (2700 m), where the hot spring is waiting to loosen our aching muscles. After relaxing for 2 hours, we return back to our hotel in Cotahuasi, to enjoy a hearty meal to replenish our energy levels.

Day 3: Cotahuasi - Coropuna - Chuquibamba - Iray - Castillo Aplao - Corire - Arequipa. (B) (L) (D)
After an early breakfast at 05:30 AM, our private transportation will take us to the lagoon of Pallar Cocha (4750 m). This lagoon is located on the base of the Coropuna Mountain, and we will take our bikes to go downhill from the Andes to the coast. This downhill will be on dirt road, with some short sections of uphill. The rest of the road will be pure downhill, passing through small typical villages, cactus forest, canyons, deserts while seeing a big contrast of the landscape and climate change. This biking trip will take between 6 to 8 hours until we reach Aplao (624 m), where we will have lunch. After, your private transportation will transfer you back to your hotel in Arequipa (3 hours journey). We truly hope you had an amazing biking tour in the Cotahuasi Canyon!
