stones accessed by long staircases. We will have the

town, religious and agricultural centre during the Inca
Empire, and get a clear idea of the military strategy
against possible invasions. On our way back to Cusco we will
visit the picturesque Andean village of Chinchero where the
remains of what was the royal hacienda of Tupac Inca
Yupanqui lies. Admire its well preserved Inca Wall at the
Main Square, visit the beautiful colonial temple built on
Inca foundations, with interesting frescoes on the portico.
Back to Cusco in the afternoon. And transfer your hotel.
Day 5: Cusco – Maras – Moray – Salts Mines. (B)
At 09.00 am excursion to Maras in the route view beautiful
mountains and snows Chicon, Veronica, Pitusiray and
Sawaysiray. Then, visit the amphitheatre of Moray
constituted by agricultural terraces in circular form, used
by the Incas to experience and to domesticate the plants
that soon seeded in other places of the empire. (This place
is difficult during the months of rains - of November to
March)
Following a dirt road for 4 Km one arrives at the Inca Salt
Mines. From the mountains emerges a spring of lukewarm water
with a high density of salt, which the local peasants have
canalized and distribute to more than 5000 wells where the
liquid evaporates, leaving behind a crust, which is
periodically extracted for its processing and commerce. For
approximately one hour one descends along a path, which
borders the wells to reach the banks of the Urubamba River.
Here one can visit the Caves of Pichingoto is a Quechua
community dwelling in the base of the basalt "Qoriq'aqya"
Mountain; the houses have facades that are made with
sun-dried mud-bricks, but, which entrails are carved in the
mountain. They are small caverns or caves inhabited even
today by the beginning of the XXI century; although, their
occupants are already educated or have some instruction
level, they have a small Catholic Chapel and even
electricity inside their houses. Some authors suggest that
the name comes from "pichinco" (bird), and "q'oto" (goiter).
After continue to Urubamba and back to Cusco transfer your
hotel. Overnight in Cusco.
Day 6: Cusco South Circuit (Tipon, Piquillaqta and
Andahuyalillas) (B)
At 09.00 am excursion of the south Cusco. A half kilometer
away from the paved road is the small village of Tipón where
an extraordinary colonial abode stands out. It is without
any doubt, the most important countryside monument inherited
from colonial times but nowadays is completely abandoned.
The original Quechua name of the whole Park is lost, and
today it has diverse groups, standing out the sector where
some Inkan "royal inclosures" are found. That group is found
in a slight and warm ravine at an altitude of 3500 mts.
(11480 Ft.). Besides, the terracing found over here is very
impressive, it contains 12 very fertile terraces that are
still cultivated, and their retaining walls were built with
well carved stones. Even more impressive is the irrigation
system that is still serving agriculture and was made taking
advantage of the water spring existing in the spot. It has
carved stone channels, precisely calculated and sometimes
with almost vertical falls that all together constitute a
hydraulic engineering master work. Likewise, there are some
fountains that must have ceremonial duties. Then continue to
pre-Hispanic site of Pikillaqta is located over 3350 mts.
(11000 Ft.) and belonged to a satellite city of the Wari
Culture developed in the present-day Ayacucho department.
The Wari Culture is a blend of cultural elements of the
Warpa, Nazca and Tiawanako civilizations. It undertook the
start of its territorial expansion and then the Wari
invasion of the Qosqo valley toward the year 750 AD; being
developed approximately until 1200 AD. Everything indicates
that by the beginning of the Inkan development the Waris
were defeated in this region, conquered and absorbed, and
their city was reused for the Tawantinsuyo's interests.
Today that pre-Inkan City contains approximately 700
buildings, 200 "kanchas" (apartments) and 504 "qolqas"
(storehouses) and different buildings. After continue to
Andahuyalillas on its vast Main Plaza adorned with "pisonay"
(coral trees) and palm trees is its most valuable jewel: the
Andahuaylillas colonial church. The church is considered to
be the "Sistine Chapel" of the Americas, because of the
quality of the artworks found inside it. This church must
have been built over some important Inkan building, possibly
a "Waka" (shrine), as bases of the church were made with
carved andesites belonging to religious Quechua
architecture.
Entering the church through its main gate, towards the left
side is the baptistery; around its entrance is the writing
"I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit, Amen"; what is interesting is that
the writing is in five languages spoken at the time when the
church was built: Latin, Spanish, Quechua, Pukina and Aymara
(today Pukina is an extinct language).
