History.
The name of the department probably derives from the old town of Guanacos, which was a very prominent city in this region.
Huánuco was first known as an area for hunters. It is most famous for its pottery, but long before in areas like Kotosh or Piruru in Tantamayo, it was established as a cultural center.
Some pre-ceramic temples belonging to the Mito culture, such as the famous "Manos Cruzadas" temple, were found in Kotosh. Wayra Sirka pottery (1800 B.C.) has been identified in this area. It is some of the oldest pottery found on the continent.
First the Chavin culture existed in this area (1000 B.C.). Later the Higueras were formed. The Incas later took over and they built their provincial capital in Huánucopampa.

Tourism
In Tingo María tourists can catch a glimpse of "Sleeping Beauty", which is a group of mountains whose shape resembles its name. The Cueva de las Lechuzas is located in its foothills. This is a huge stone cave that is home to an important colony of birds similar to owls. The Padre Abad Canyon, located 196 km from Tingo María, is a sight to see because of its rich vegetation and beautiful waterfalls.
Another attraction in the Huánuco area is the Tingo María National Park. It has a large variety of colorful and oddly shaped insects and butterflies.
Cities like Huánuco, which is the capital of the department, and the picturesque town of Tomayquichua have beautiful churches and convents that tourists can visit.
