History.
The territory for this department was originally a part of Peru's
Viceroyalty. Missionaries that had their headquarters in several
different points throughout the country explored it. During the
colonial period, the capital of this territory was the ancient city
of Moyobamba. Today Moyobamba is the capital of the San Martín
department.
In the Republican Era, sailors and members of the Peruvian Army
explored Loreto's territory. Currently, the Peruvian Army, Air Force
and Navy give assistance to inhabitants along the rivers and border
zones.
Loreto's capital, Iquitos, has became one of Peru's most important
river ports for the trade and exporting of raw materials.
Currently, the discovery of petroleum reserves gives Loreto hope for
a better future.
Tourism
In spite of the scorching hot climate, tourists flock to this region
of Peru. Iquitos is especially popular. It's as if there are two
worlds existing at the same time: that of a bustling city filled
with traders and of a luscious, tropical jungle along the banks of
the Amazon River.
Tourists can also visit the Nanay and Morococha Rivers, as well as
the Quistococha lagoon. Another recommended trip is to take a canoe
along the Zungarococha Lake. It is located on the right bank of the
Nanay River and offers beautiful landscapes. You can also pay a
visit to the Pacaya-Samiria, which has a large variety of animal
species and vegetation. |
