Rainforest Tambopata

This tour includes one of the principals The trip is full of
adventure, with possibilities to find wild animals and the most
attractive landscapes of Tambopata : The amazing macaw clay lick "collpa"
in the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park and the wonderful Sandoval lake
in the Tambopata - Candamo Reserved Zone, Lima, Puerto Maldonado, Cusco, Machupicchu, Sacred
Valley of the Incas.

Itinerary Day by Day:

Day 1: Arrival Lima.
Assistance on your arrival in Lima and transfer to your
selected hotel. Free time to rest and prepare for starting
your trip around this unusual city and magical country
Day 2: Lima – City Tour (B)
In the morning, city tour of the "City of Kings", including
the Lima’s Historical Center, visiting Main Square,
Government Palace, City Hall, the Cathedral (Here is the
tomb of Francisco Pizarro, conqueror of Peru), Museum of the
Cathedral, Temple of San Francisco Convent, Lima Colonial
Balconies, Torre Tagle Palace, Paseo de Aguas and Convent de
los Descalzos. Then, drive through the residential district
of San Isidro, visiting El Olivar Park; Miraflores, visiting
the Kennedy Park, Love Park and Larcomar Mall. Free for
lunch. Optional
Day 3: Lima – Puerto Maldonado – Lodge. (B) (L) (D)
Breakfast at hotel. Transfer to the airport to board the
regular flight to Puerto Maldonado. Reception at the airport
and transportation to the Wasai Maldonado Ecolodge, where
you will receive a welcoming tropical fruit beverage. You
will embark for a 4 hour motorboat trip up the Tambopata
River to Wasai Tambopata Lodge & Research Center (box lunch
on route). During the trip we will be able to observe the
local farms, while groups of birds pass over the boat.
Opportunity to see families of Capybaras, the largest
rodents in the world. Reception, accommodation at the lodge.
After a short rest we will have a brief introductory walk in
the forest nearby to learn basic principles of ecology and
hear some wildlife natural history and observe the nocturnal
life of insects, frogs of various colours, and an occasional
encounter with nocturnal mammals. Return to the lodge for
dinner. We will enjoy the diverse sounds of the jungle which
will accompany our first night in Amazonia. Sleep at Wasai
Tambopata Lodge. (L, D)
Day 4: Wasai Lodge – Macaw Clay Lick . (B) (L) (D)
Early wake up at 4:30 am to take a light breakfast (coffee
or mate), to begin with our 40-minute journey upstream to
the Macaw Clay Lick “El Chuncho” in the Bahuaja-Sonene
National Park. We will have the opportunity to enjoy the
beautiful natural sceneries and wildlife of the riverbanks.
At our arrival, if weather permits, we will observe one of
the greatest wildlife spectacles where hundreds of parrots
and different species of macaws gather to eat clay, an
unforgettable experience. Then, we will walk through the
river beach searching for animal footprints while we have
refreshment. In the middle morning we return to the lodge to
have breakfast and then take a rest to relax or do the
adventure activities like: zip line, tree climbing, etc. or
enjoy the facilities and the surroundings of Wasai.
(At 11 am) We leave again to take a 10 minute river journey
to enjoy “Cascadas del Gato”
(Cat Cascades), where we will swim in a “natural Jacuzzi”.
If you wish, you can join us to fish in the river where
inhabit more than 250 species of fish or do kayaking on the
river.
After lunch, we will have an ethno botanical walk into the
rainforest by the Tambopata cross path, to learn about
plants and medicinal trees of the area; and to observe the
amazing jungle ecosystem where we will see walking palm
trees, giant lupuna trees, snake trees and so on. At
nightfall, we embark again to make a nocturnal caiman
search. Night at WASAI Tambopata
Day 5: Wasai Lodge – Puerto Maldonado River. (B) (L) (D)
After breakfast we will make a trip in boat to the Wasai
Maldonado Ecolodge, in Puerto Maldonado where we will relax
in our bungalows and enjoy a tasty lunch. After lunch we
will leave and travel for thirty minutes on the Madre de
Dios River, to the access trail to Lake Sandoval, a
beautiful typical rainforest lake. 3 km hike to the banks of
the lake. There we will board a canoe to paddle around the
lake enjoying the beauty of the landscape and observing the
wildlife, such as kingfishers, herons, hoatzins (unique pre
historic looking birds) , monkeys, etc. If we are lucky we
could see the family of giant otters which live at the lake.
We will have the opportunity to swim in the lake.
It is time to begin our return hike to the Madre de Dios
River to return to Puerto Maldonado. There we will stay in
the modern and comfortable bungalows of Wasai Maldonado
Ecolodge. After dinner we will be able to rest or go around
the city on foot or on bicycle. We can enjoy the pool and
its cascade surrounded by verdant vegetation. Rest of the
night free to enjoy the night life of this welcoming city.

Day 6: Puerto Maldonado – Cusco – City Tour and Nearby
Ruins. (B)
Early in the morning, transfer to the airport to take a
flight to Cusco.
Assistance on arrival in Cusco and transfer to your selected
hotel. Free time to take a short rest to be acclimatized to
the altitude.
In the afternoon, city tour of Cusco visiting the Main
Square and the Temple of the Sun or Korikancha. Then, drive
out of the city to visit the Inca sites of Kenko,
Tambomachay, Puca Pucara and the impressive fortress of
Sacsayhuaman, built strategically on a hill overlooking
Cusco; famous for its enormous carved stones joined with
astounding precision to form the outer walls. Some of these
stones stand over 9m / 30ft tall and weight over 350 tons.
Day 7: Cusco – Machupicchu. (B) (L)
The day starts with an early morning rise to transfer to
Cusco train station for a three hour train journey to the
famous Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu, also known as "The Lost
City of the Incas". Arrive at Aguas Calientes station
followed by a 30-minute bus drive, climbing 6km of winding
road, to the incredible Machu Picchu. Upon arrival, we´ll
participate in a guided tour of the Citadel, visiting the
Main Plaza, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Sun Dial (Intiwatana),
the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows and
various burial grounds.
After the tour you will have time to stroll around the
archeological site at your leisure. Lunch in a restaurant at
Aguas Calientes town. Late afternoon return to Cusco.
Overnight at selected hotel in Cusco.
Day 8: Cusco – Sacred Valley of the Incas. (B) (L)
Excursion to the "Sacred Valley of the Incas", a succession
of picturesque towns, agricultural terraces and
archaeological sites. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays,
we´ll have the opportunity to bargain with vendors or stroll
at the Pisac's typical Indian market, with a catholic mass
service on Sunday (celebrated in Quechua, the native
language).
Lunch at a local restaurant in the Sacred Valley.
In the afternoon pass through Calca and Urubamba towns to
arrive to the Inca Fortress and Citadel of Ollantaytambo,
which was built to guard the entry of this part of the
valley and protect it from enemies of the lower jungles;
consisting in a series of superimposed terraces of carved
stones accessed by long staircases. We will have the
opportunity to walk through the quaint streets of the nearby
town, religious and agricultural centre during the Inca
Empire, and get a clear idea of the military strategy
against possible invasions.
On our way back to Cusco we will visit the picturesque
Andean village of Chinchero where the remains of what was
the royal hacienda of Tupac Inca Yupanqui lies. Admire its
well preserved Inca Wall at the Main Square, visit the
beautiful colonial temple built on Inca foundations, with
interesting frescoes on the portico.
Back to Cusco in the afternoon.
Day 9: Cusco – Lima – Home.
Early in the morning, transfer to airport to take a flight
to Lima. Arrival and your home or next destination.
