History.
This region of the department was already known long before the
arrival of the Incas. The original inhabitants gave it the name of
"Moquegua", which means silent place in Quechua. Around 1540 the
first Spaniards arrived looking for an area in the region where they
could establish themselves. It is believed that the city of Moquegua
was founded in 1541. In 1604, an earthquake destroyed the majority
of the city. The organization of Moquegua as an independent region
occurred in 1857. However, it was not officially named a department
until April 3, 1930.
Moquegua is an area rich in mineral resources and they are currently
trying to use these resources to generate money for the area.
Tourism
The olives, sweets, fruits, religious festivals and the old
traditions and customs make up the folklore of Moquegua. For
tourists, the major attractions lie within the natural beauty of the
region. For example, the Lariscota, Vizcachas and Pasto Grande
lagoons offer first class attractions to the visitor. In these areas
hunting and fishing are popular. Those who suffer from rheumatism
can find a cure in the numerous thermal baths, such as the one in
Carumas. Hundreds of people visit these fountains, especially
between the months of January through March.
The port of Ilo is one of the most important of southern Peru. It
has become an industrial and commercial center that is rapidly
growing. |
