Reserve Pampa Galeras. |
 |
 |
 |
 |
This
reserve was created in 1967 with the name of Pampa
Galeras, however it was modified to Pampa
Galeras-Bárbara D´Achille in 1993, in memory of the
journalist who wrote the ecological page for El Comercio
newspaper.
This reserve, located in the Ayacucho region between
3,800 and 5,000 meters above sea level, has a surface
area of 6,500 hectares. The plateau spans an area of 75
thousand hectares, encompassing the country community of
Lucanas.
The management of the reserve's fauna was initiated in
1965, and after a long 30 years of constant work, they
succeeded in recuperating the vicuña population. The
restoration had been possible by means of hunting
restrictions, the prohibition of international business
pertaining to the vicuña, and the obtainment of
technical and financial assistance to drive these
actions.
The characteristic vegetation of the Reserve is straw,
formed by various species of Poaceae like Fescue (Festuca
sp.), Peruvian Feather Grass (Stipa ichu) and
Calamagrostis sp. These plants grow in big groups
dispersed between the predominating shrub-like species,
such as the tola (Lepidophyllum quadrangulare) and the
butterweed (Senecio sp.). Along the rocky valleys it is
possible to find queñual (Polylepis sp.) and the
butterfly bush (Buddleja sp.).
On the other hand, the Puya Raimondi is a plant that
reaches 12 meters in height, blooms every 100 years and
flaunts a grand arrangement containing 6 thousand
flowers.
The vicuña (Vicugna vicugna) is the most abundant and
representative specie in the Pampa Galeras, and
therefore it's protection and conservation motivated the
creation of the reserve. Another important specie found
here is the guanaco (Lama guanicoe), one of the
Camelidae like the vicuña which is found in it's wild
state. Other mammals found in the reserve are: que al
igual que la vicuña es uno de los camélidos
sudamericanos que se encuentran en estado silvestre.
Otros mamíferos presentes en la Reserva son: the Culpeo
(Pseudalopex culpaeus), the vizcacha (Lagidium peruanum),
the guemal (Hippocamelus antisensis), the South American
opossum (Didelphis marsupialis) and the long-tailed
weasel (Mustela frenata).
The bird which gets the most attention for it's grand
wingspan is the Andean condor (Vultur gryphus). It is
also possible to observe other species like the ornate
tinamou (Nothoprocta ornata) and the puna tinamou (Tinamotis
pentlandii). In the aquatic areas, those which stand out
are the yellow-billed pintail (Anas georgica) and the
speckled teal (Anas flavirostris).
The principle objective of the Pampa Galeras-Barbara
D'Achille National Reserve is to protect the vicuña and
promote the communal development by means of sustainable
management of this resource.
