Cusco Kind of the Andean |
|
Often referred to as the 'Archaeological
Capital of the Americas' Cusco is a
beautiful city riddled with contrasts
between the indigenous styles and the
modern western world. It is these
contrasts that have given Cusco its rare
beauty.
Most visitors are keen to get to Machu
Picchu, either by trekking for 4 days
along the Inca Trail, or by 4 hours in
the train, Sacred Valley, but Cusco
itself has a lot to offer the visitor
and most travellers usually end up
seduced with this vibrant city and stay
longer than first planned. |

Inca
Trail the Best trekking in South America |
|
The Inca Trail is Peru's best known hike,
combining a stunning mix of Inca ruins, mountain
scenery, lush cloud-forest and rich subtropical
jungle. Over 250 species of orchid have been
counted in the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary,
as well as numerous birds such as hummingbirds,
waterfowl and the majestic Andean Condor. The
star of the Sanctuary is the spectacled bear - a
shy, herbivorous animal that is extremely rare
and close to extinction. |

Machupicchu Lost City of the Incas |
|
Located 120 km northwest of Cusco, the Inca city
of Machu Picchu lay hidden from the world in
dense jungle covered mountains until 1911. This
'Lost City' is one of the world's archaeological
jewels and is one of South America's major
travel destinations.
The well preserved ruins of Machu Picchu seem to
almost cling to the steep hillside, surrounded
by towering green mountains overlooking the
Vilcanota River Valley. Even after having seen
the classic photos of Machu Picchu in guide
books, web sites, travel brochures and postcards
you still cannot fail but to be impressed by the
awe-inspiring location of the ruins.
When you read about its discovery and the
unsolved mystery of its purpose and how it came
to become a 'lost to the world' you will realize
why so many people make the pilgrimage to visit
this fascinating and spiritual site. |
|
Mystirios Nazca Lines |
On an arid plain 22km north of modern day Nasca
are the world famous 'Nasca Lines'. Straight
lines, abstract designs and outlines of animals
are etched on the dark desert surface revealing
a lighter colored soil beneath.
Images of birds predominate, some measuring up
to 60m across, but there are also outlines of a
whale, a dog, a monkey, a spider and a flower.
The lines were not 'discovered' until spotted
from above by aircraft in 1939. They are thought
to have been drawn by the Nasca civilization
(which reached its peak about 700 AD). |
|
Arequipa White City |
Arequipa is well known for its glistening white
buildings made from sillar, a white volcanic
rock, which gives the city its nickname 'La
Ciudad Blanca' or 'The White City'.
Arequipa is Peru's second largest city and was
founded in 1540. The site was chosen for its
proximity to the coast, enabling settlers to
trade the products of Cusco and the mines of
Potosi (Bolivia) with Lima. The local
cultivation of wheat, corn and grapes all
contributed to the regions economic growth.
The city is surrounded by 3 volcanoes; El Misti,
still active at 5822m, the higher and extinct
Chachani 6075m and Pichu Pichu 5571m. The Incas
highly respected these volcanoes since the melt
water from their snow-capped peaks form the
headwaters of the mighty Amazon River, thousands
of kilometers away. |

Lima
Gate of the Peru |
Lima is not the most attractive of cities, and
arriving at the airport to the sight of crowds
of people outside offering taxi and hotel
services can be a shock to most tourists who are
expecting pretty little Andean villages and Inca
ruins. The climate doesn't help either, with
Lima being covered in a blanket of low cloud
except for the months of January and February
when the sun shines.
However Lima does have some redeeming features,
notably its many interesting museums and
excellent restaurants and cafes. Lima also has a
good selection of accommodation at prices to
suit most budgets. |
|
Iquitos Gate of the Amazon River |
|
Nearly 2,000 miles up-river from the mouth of
the Amazon lies the jungle-locked city of
Iquitos. Accessible only by boat or by plane
Iquitos still displays evidence of the wealth
created during the 'rubber boom' of the 1860's.
Houses both near the main plaza and the river
are still faced with the beautiful glazed tiles
imported from Portugal along with many other
European luxury goods. |
