History.
Túpac Yupanqui entered and subdued the Inca dominion of Moyobamba,
known during that time as Muyupampa. In 1839, the Spaniard Alonso de
Alvarado reached the Mayo River and founded a city to which he named
as Santiago de los Valles de Moyobamba, which later became the
capital of Maynas.
Priest Manuel Sobreviela became an important person to this area.
Between 1787 and 1790 he traveled along the Huallaga River.
Afterwards he published a map named "Planning for the Course of the
Huallaga and Ucayali Rivers and for the Pampa del Sacramento".
On August 19, 1821, the capital of the department, Moyobamba, was
the first Peruvian city to declare its independence. In the last few
years, a new highway increased trading in this area, therefore
benefiting the economy of this department.
Tourism
San Martín offers a great diversity of natural attractions for
adventure trips, hunting and fishing. It has navigable rivers,
lagoons, thermal baths, waterfalls, and ruins such as that of the
Gran Pajatén (in Pataz discovered by Gene Savoy). The Oasis is a
tourist center on the banks of the Cumbaza River that has sport
fields and stages for dancing.
The Petroglifos of Polish are located 8.5 KM away from the City of
Tarapoto. There are a number of archaeological remains, animals,
plants, and some linguistic symbols engraved in stone blocks.
Another site worth mentioning is the beautiful Sauce Lake, which is
located 16 KM from the river with the same name. The lake has
comfortable hostals, which provide an easy stay for visitors.
