History.
Scientists and researchers still have much to learn about the
archaeology of Tumbes. However, we do know that there are two very
ancient ceramics eras, known as San Juan and Pechiche.
Between the years 500 B.C and 500 A.D, the Garbanzal culture
followed these eras. Years later they were replaced by a group
related to the Milagro Culture from the Guayas region.
The Inca Empire extended its area up to Tumbes. This became the
contact point between the Tahuantinsuyo and the European
civilization. On January 7, 1821, the people of Tumbes proclaimed
their independence.
In 1941, during the conflict with Equador, the Battle of Zarumilla
took place. This battle provided a great win for the Peruvian army.
Tourism
Tumbes is a great vacation spot for the water enthusiast. The
Pacific waters are warm and the sandy beaches are white and pretty.
Fishing, swimming, water-skiing, yachting and canoeing are all great
pastimes to enjoy here. Also in Tumbes is the famous Caleta de la
Cruz de Pizarro, where conquerors landed more than 400 years ago to
begin the conquest of Peru.
Tourists can also visit the National Park Los Cerros de Amotape. Its
dry forest formations give this area a shrubby appearance, which
make it different from other parts of the coast. |
