Peru Adventure: Classic Inca Trail
Begin your adventure in Lima, the vibrant capital at sea level (0 feet / 0 meters), where you’ll have time to acclimate and explore the city before your journey into the Andes. The next stop is Cusco, perched at 11,152 feet (3,400 meters), a city renowned for its rich history and cultural blend of Inca and Spanish influences.
From Cusco, embark on the renowned Inca Trail, a trek that will lead you through breathtaking landscapes and ancient ruins. Starting at Piscacucho and hiking through the sacred paths, you’ll traverse diverse terrains, including the high-altitude Warmihuañusca Pass at 13,780 feet (4,200 meters). As you continue, you’ll encounter the remarkable archaeological sites of Runkuraqay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarka, and Wiñay Wayna, each offering unique glimpses into the Inca civilization. Your trek culminates at Machu Picchu, the awe-inspiring “Lost City of the Incas” at 7,970 feet (2,430 meters). After exploring these ancient wonders, return to Cusco and then to Lima, concluding a remarkable journey through Peru’s majestic highlands.
Upon arrival at the airport a host will meet and assist you in transferring to the hotel and help you in registering. In the afternoon City Tour of Lima half day tour visits both the colonial and modern sections of this “City of Kings.” Colonial sites include the lovely Plaza de Armas with its cathedral and palace, and the exquisite Torre Tagle Palace modern day seat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In modern Lima, drive along the exclusive residential areas of Miraflores and San Isidro. Continue to San Isidro and Miraflores located in a unique vice-royal mansion of the 18th century built over a 7th century pre-Columbian pyramid, is surrounded by beautiful gardens. Features the finest gold and silver collection from Ancient Peru and the famous erotic archaeological collection, one of the most visited Peruvian tourist attractions.
Breakfast in the hotel. Early in the morning, transfer to airport to take a flight to Cusco. Assistance on arrival in Cusco and transfer to your selected hotel. Free time to take a short rest to be acclimatized to the altitude. In the afternoon, city tour of Cusco visiting the Main Square, the Cathedral and the Temple of the Sun or Korikancha. Then, drive out of the city to visit the Inca sites of Kenko, Tambomachay, Puca Pucara and the impressive fortress of Sacsayhuaman, built strategically on a hill overlooking Cusco; famous for its enormous carved stones joined with astounding precision to form the outer walls. Some of these stones stand over 9m / 30ft tall and weight over 350 tons. You will receive a briefing about the trail by the guide in your hotel.
Our guide will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco very early in the morning, to take bus to the city of Chilca to begin your trek along the Inca Trail to Machupicchu. After approximately three hours walking you will stop for lunch. Then you will continue walking towards your first camp at Wayllabamba, on the way you will have a guided tour of the archeological complex of Llactapata. Dinner and overnight in tents at the campsite.
After breakfast, the toughest part of the trail begins, walking towards the highest point in the Inca Trail where you will have an unbelievable panoramic view of the whole area and will observe different types of microclimates. After a 3 hours walk you will reach the first pass, named Warmiwañusca or Dead Woman’s Pass, at approximately 4,200 m.a.s.l. Here, you will have a tremendous feeling of achievement mixed with relief on reaching the top. After lunch you will continue your walking down to Pacaymayo where you will camp and have dinner.
After breakfast start the descent towards the second most important pass of the trail at 3,850 m.a.s.l. having a guided visit at the archaeological complex of Runkurakay and the Inca citadel of Sayacmarca. Continue your trekking towards Puya Patamarka (Cloud-level town), another important archaeological monument, where lunch will be served. After a short break you will continue walking to Wiñay Huayna (Forever Young) for a guided visit of this impressive archaeological complex with a spectacular setting. Dinner and overnight at the camp.
After breakfast, have a very early start to arrive in time for sunrise at Machupicchu. After a one hour walk through the forest towards the Inti Punku or the Gate of the Sun, also known as the Entrance Gate to Machupicchu, where you will have the most impressive panoramic view of the citadel. Upon arrival at Machupicchu, three-hours guided tour around the citadel, visiting the main sites and monuments. After the tour you will have free time to wander around, then you will meet with the rest of the group to drive by bus down to Aguas Calientes. In the afternoon, transfer by train to Cusco. Upon arrival in Cusco transfer to your hotel. Overnight.
Transfer to the airport for your departure to Lima and your connecting international flight. Arrive home full of great memories of the rich tradition of Colonial Lima and the mystical Land of the Incas included Inca Trail.
