DAY 1:

Arrival in Lima

Upon arrival at the airport a host will meet and assist you in transferring to the hotel and help you in registering. In the afternoon City Tour of Lima half day tour visits both the colonial and modern sections of this “City of Kings.” Colonial sites include the lovely Plaza de Armas with its cathedral and palace, and the exquisite Torre Tagle Palace modern day seat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In modern Lima, drive along the exclusive residential areas of Miraflores and San Isidro. Continue to San Isidro and Miraflores located in a unique vice-royal mansion of the 18th century built over a 7th century pre-Columbian pyramid, is surrounded by beautiful gardens. Features the finest gold and silver collection from Ancient Peru and the famous erotic archaeological collection, one of the most visited Peruvian tourist attractions.

Breakfast in the hotel. Early in the morning, transfer to airport to take a flight to Cusco. Assistance on arrival in Cusco and transfer to your selected hotel. Free time to take a short rest to be acclimatized to the altitude. In the afternoon, city tour of Cusco visiting the Main Square, the Cathedral and the Temple of the Sun or Korikancha. Then, drive out of the city to visit the Inca sites of Kenko, Tambomachay, Puca Pucara and the impressive fortress of Sacsayhuaman, built strategically on a hill overlooking Cusco; famous for its enormous carved stones joined with astounding precision to form the outer walls. Some of these stones stand over 9m / 30ft tall and weight over 350 tons. You will receive a briefing about the trail by the guide in your hotel.

Excursion to the “Sacred Valley of the Incas”, a succession of picturesque towns, agricultural terraces and archeological sites. we´ll have the opportunity to bargain with vendors or stroll at the Pisac’s typical Indian market, with a catholic mass service on Sunday (celebrated in Quechua, the native language). Lunch at a local restaurant in the Sacred Valley.

In the afternoon pass through Calca and Urubamba towns to arrive to the Inca Fortress and Citadel of Ollantaytambo, which was built to guard the entry of this part of the valley and protect it from enemies of the lower jungles; consisting in a series of superimposed terraces of carved stones accessed by long staircases. We will have the opportunity to walk through the quaint streets of the nearby town, religious and agricultural centre during the Inca Empire, and get a clear idea of the military strategy against possible invasions. On our way back to Cusco we will visit the picturesque Andean village of Chinchero where the remains of what was the royal hacienda of Tupac Inca Yupanqui lies. Admire its well preserved Inca Wall at the Main Square, visit the beautiful colonial temple built on Inca foundations, with interesting frescoes on the portico. Back to Cusco in the afternoon.

The tour starts early in the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco between 04:00 and 04:30 am. We will travel by car around two hours to the south until arriving to Cusipata – Paucarpata district (3310m.a.s.l.), where we can enjoy a buffet breakfast. After the breakfast we will travel by car 1 more hour to the control point (Llaqto), where we will start the trek. The trek will last approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes; we will appreciate the typical landscape of the Andes, its flora and fauna, among which Llamas and Alpacas stand out. Upon reaching the viewpoint of Vinicunca or Montaña de Colores (5080 masl.), our guide will give us a description about the orography, ecosystem and color of the mountain. We can also use the moment to take photos to remember and to admire the beautiful landscape of the mountain chain of Vinicunca. Then we will return by the same route to the point where we started the trek (Llaqto), where our transport will be waiting to take us back to Cusipata. Here we will enjoy the buffet lunch. After lunch we will start the return trip to the Cusco city, arriving between 4 and 5 in the afternoon. The last stop will be near to the Plaza de Armas of Cusco

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your Cusco hotel and transferred to the train station. You’ll take the train through the stunning landscapes of the Sacred Valley to the station at kilometer 104. Here you will begin your hike following the original path of the Incas through the beautiful Andean mountains.

The first Inca ruins you will encounter are those of Chachabamba, a small archaeological complex believed to have once been a guard house to Machu Picchu. From here the trail ascends at a gradual incline for three hours until you reach 8,690 feet (2,650 meters). You will visit the site of Wiñay Wayna, which means “Eternal Youth” in the indigenous Quechua language. The name comes from the perennial orchids that speckle the landscape, making Wiñay Wayna perhaps the most beautiful place on the Inca Trail. It is also the last urban center before arriving to Machu Picchu.

Wiñay Wayna consists of 4 main sectors: the urban sector, located in the lower part and containing more than 20 buildings; the ritual sector; the terraced sector for crops; and the tower sector, which boasts the site’s finest architecture and was probably a place of religious or social importance.

After touring the site and lunching, you will continue on to the Inti Punku or the “Sun Gate,” from where you can see Machu Picchu in all its majesty and grandeur. From Inti Punku you will hike downhill for roughly 30 minutes toward the citadel’s principal ruins, taking in magnificent panoramic views along the way. You will then take a bus into the mountain town of Aguas Calientes, where you will have dinner and spend the night in a comfortable Machu Picchu hotel.

Rise early and head to the bus station for the 20-minute drive up to the entrance of Machu Picchu, where you will embark on a 2-hour guided tour of the citadel. If you choose to breakfast at 5 a.m. or pack a breakfast box, you can reach the citadel in time to see the sun rise over the Inca ruins.

The magnificent handiwork of the Incas is abundantly evident even centuries after it was first set into place by genius engineers. The precision of the carved walls contrasts sharply with the wild, verdant mountains and steep highlands. The city itself can be divided into 3 areas: the urban, agricultural, and adjacent zones. In the urban sector you can find the Temple of the Sun, Royal Tomb, ceremonial fountains, Royal Palace, Temple of the Three Windows, Main Temple, Intiwatana and more. The agricultural sector includes the cemetery and the Funeral Rock. Finally, the adjacent zones include Intipunku, the Temple of the Moon, Huayna Picchu, and the Drawbridge.

You may want to take advantage of Machu Picchu’s spiritual setting to meditate and relax. But the more adventurous can take a 90-minute climb up the nearby peak of Huayna Picchu. On the way down from Huayna Picchu, take the trek past the Temple of the Moon, once a retreat for Inca nobles and priests. The extra trek is not for the faint of heart and must be done with extreme caution. However, the opportunity to see Machu Picchu from another angle is often enough to draw the more adventurous visitor. Note that park officials limit the number of visitors to Huayna Picchu to 400 per day and tickets need to be purchased in advance.

After your day in Machu Picchu, you will take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes to collect your belongings from your hotel and return to Cusco by train, where you will be met for a transfer to your hotel.

The trip starts at your hotel in Cusco; our transfer will visit you between 04:30 and 05:00 in the morning. We will make a trip of two and a half hours by car to the town of Mollepata, where we can have breakfast and stock up on the latest provisions. After breakfast we will continue our trip for an hour and a half by car; the road we will take is dirt (path) to reach the community of Soraypampa which is located at an altitude of 3900 meters above sea level. During the trip we will see beautiful landscapes and the impressive snowy “Salkantay”. From Soraypampa we will start a 2 km walk. The way is ascending and it will take us about an hour and a half to two. While we do the walk we will see a panorama of snow-capped mountains, impressive natural landscapes and a great diversity of flora and fauna until we reach the “Laguna de Humantay”. It is located at an altitude of 4200 meters above sea level.

The “Humantay Lagoon” is turquoise due to the mineral found in the bottom; the lagoon is fed by the glaciers of the mountain and is considered a jewel of nature. In addition to delighting in the Humantay Lagoon we can enjoy the impressive views of the mountains that surround it. We will descend walking until we reach the community of Soraypampa where we can enjoy a buffet lunch. After lunch we will start the return trip to the city of Cusco. Our tour ends at approximately 6:30 in the afternoon. Our last stop will be near the Plaza de Armas of Cusco, thus ending our hike to the Humantay lagoon

Transfer to the airport for your departure to Lima and your connecting international flight. Arrive home full of great memories of the rich tradition of Colonial Lima and the mystical Land of the Incas included Inca Trail.
